Some games are universally praised, topping "Greatest of All Time" lists, winning endless awards, and being treated like untouchable masterpieces. But when you take a step back, do they really deserve it?
Take The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was groundbreaking in 1998, but is it still the best Zelda game? Or is its reputation just fueled by nostalgia? If it came out today, would it be held in the same regard, or would people call it outdated?
Then there’s Red Dead Redemption 2. Some call it the greatest open-world game ever made, while others feel it prioritizes realism over fun. Is slow, methodical gameplay immersive—or just tedious?
Or what about Elden Ring? It won Game of the Year and was praised for its vast world, but some players found the lack of direction frustrating. Did it really innovate, or was it just Dark Souls with a bigger map?
And then there’s GTA V. It’s been re-released across three console generations, yet Rockstar still hasn’t given us GTA VI. Has it earned its legendary status, or is it just running on momentum at this point?
Overrated doesn’t mean bad—some of these games are undeniably great. But does their reputation exceed what they actually offer?
What do you think? Which game gets way more credit than it deserves?
